This week I’m sharing the fourteenth of sixteen stories from my upcoming release Love Scenes From the Black Marketa dark anthology.  Book release is June 7th — you can check out the cover and pre-order a copy below!

This week’s excerpt is the first 8 lines from Descent.  On the front lines of war in the distant future, a young soldier wakes to a nightmare.

The black angel is there, waiting.

Distant clouds, silver shadows, the outline of a cold red sun.  The world is made of fog and ice.

I can’t tell if I’m falling or floating…some vague memory tells me I’m in pain, or should be.  The sound of guns, the smell of cold fire.  I taste carbon in the wind, feel the stain of burning smoke.  Bodies torn in a liquid haze, a broth of dead.

I wake choking on my own blood.

From the author The Rike Chronicles, The Skullborn Trilogy, Red Tide At Morning and Blood Skies comes a collection of short tales straight from the heart of darkness. At times horrific, at times tender, at times profoundly bizarre, Love Scenes from the Black Market is speculative horror fiction that peels back the layers of reality to expose the cold truths locked beneath.

A band of slavers bites off more they can chew when they face the horror of the “Black Dogs”. A desperate woman discovers the truth about herself in her journey through the world’s grim final days in “Carnivore”. A mercenary and his team hunt down costumed crusaders who’ve done more bad than good in “Supers”. A young witch experiences the brutal history of a despicable artifact in “The Slaver’s Chain”.

Through war-torn epic kingdoms to a boy’s haunted backyard to the edges of the Auran Galaxy, the 16 tales from Love Scenes from the Black Market will take you on a harrowing journey across the twisted fantastic landscape of the human condition.

(Viewer note: I just realized this morning I never responded to the comments left on last week’s post. Yes, it’s been along, brain-damaging sort of week.)

All your pieces are lyrical and poetic, Steven. I always love the way you phrase your actions and descriptions in ways that are not horrific, by convey the horror so absolutely. I would love to read some of your poetry.

Thanks, Kim! I haven’t written a lot of poetry (I have this bizarre desire to make everything rhyme when I do), but maybe I should try my hand at it again.

Pre-ordered. Finally! Can’t wait to read the stories in full, love your prose. Today’s snippet was very evocative as always and left me wondering what the full story was, which is a good thing!

You chose a good title. Any book called ‘Love Scenes From the Black Market’ would have to be dark and scary.
