Dead Planet is now available for pre-order, and will be released Feb 23rd.

We’re taking another narrative leap towards the end of the novel, when Rike ventures into the remains of an ancient holy site called Azaroth City, where he finally has the chance to kill a creature called the Oracle in order to stem a universal invasion.  The burden that’s been placed on him is heavy, and as he approaches the subterranean ruins he reflects on how he got there…

After a time Rike saw a crease of darkness in the white, a sliver in the curtain wall so absolutely black it seemed to suck in the surrounding light.  He stood in awe at the foot of a great cleft, a hundred foot-high crevice filled with darkness and cold.  Massive plates of icy rock lay strewn across the path as he approached the crack, like wreckage from a hurricane.

Rike shivered, and looked back.  He was cold inside, the cold of fear, and death.

He thought about Resaana, of Baz and Lasheen and her crew.  He was alive, and they weren’t, so this task fell to him.  His life, cursed though it was, was better than no life at all, so he had little choice but to keep going: he owed them that.

Rike is back.

The Coren Armada waits at the edge of known space, ready to strike at the heart of the Auran Galaxy. It falls on Rike — last of the fabled Bloodthorn Acolytes — to eliminate the mysterious Oracle and halt an invasion that will cost millions of lives.

Unfortunately, the Oracle is somewhere on the dead planet Vesaad, base of the crime lord called Maga. In order to kill the Oracle Rike will have to contend with Vesaad’s blasted cold deserts, zombie viruses, barbaric criminals and deadly monsters, and that’s assuming he even reaches the planet in the first place.

Crossing paths with animalistic invaders, corrupt weaponsmiths, fanatic holy warriors and a bevy of attractive aliens who can’t seem to keep their hands off of him, Rike will need every last ounce of cunning and skill at his disposal if he’s going to survive his showdown with Maga and her brutal lieutenants.

Some days it just doesn’t pay to be a hero.

What a scary place! I love Rike’s vulnerability; we don’t see it too often.

I always love your descriptions, which take me right into the story. I also enjoyed having Rike a bit reflective in the moment – great excerpt!

I love that description! I’ve said it before, and I’ll keep saying it–you are the master at descriptive writing, Steven!

I especially liked the bittersweet thought that he was alive and his friends weren’t, so now it falls to him. 🙂

Great description and I love the last half where he motivates himself with thoughts of his friends. Amazing writing, and the cover of your book is gorgeous. 😀
