More from THE BLACK TOWER.

A few major battles play out in Book 3 of The Skullborn Trilogy.  The most epic in scope is an engagement in the desert south of Corinth, as forces clash over control over the portal to Chul Gaerog.  On one side of the conflict is a Jlantrian force one thousand men strong led by Aaric Blackhall, Grand Marshall of Ebonmark; on the other side is the Black Army, a mass of Tuscars and human mercenaries led by a cruel Voss named Ghul.

Here’s a glimpse of the action as the battle is just getting underway.

****

The mixed enemy infantry to the north suddenly broke into a chaotic run. Blackhall could barely see them through the sand smoke and dull crimson sunlight. The horde tore across the ruddy plains and dust drifts, a wave of metal and flesh that let loose a mass inhuman howl.

Great beetle-like nek’dool and reptile drad’mont charged ahead, impervious to the slowing effects of the thick sand. The brown and red landscape tore beneath the thunderous claws of war-beasts and infantry boots. The open sea of dust rapidly seemed to shrink, and try as he had to avoid fighting on two fronts against a force of superior size it seemed now Blackhall had no choice. The infantry charged from the high ground to the north, and Ghul’s forces had turned back to exit the valley and come at them from the south.

You know what to do,” Blackhall told the Veilwardens.

I hope those Veilwardens are REALLY tough because the odds seem pretty daunting! I always love your descriptions, can visualize the scene so well AND it’s such an otherworldly place *always*, which is great. Loved the excerpt!

The Good: The Veilwardens ARE tough. The Bad: There’s only a few of them. DOH! Thanks Veronica!

Reading that made me want to dig a hole far away from the fighting, and hide in it till the dust settled. Epic…
