As of late all of my attention has been focused on PATH OF BONES, the second book in the Skullborn Trilogy and the sequel to CITY OF SCARS.  I’m really jazzed for the February 7th release, but in the meantime I’ll keep foisting snippets upon you, like this glimpse of a rather large and horrid critter some characters encounter in the Bonelands: the Runefiend.

****

Two massive claws pushed up from the ground, each easily the size of a horse. Spindly arms pulled apart the earth as it rose, a massive and ghastly skeleton emerging from a dust womb. A tower of diseased skin came into sight as Phage men shouted out in alarm and tried to get away from the hole. The creature’s circular maws were filled with spiked teeth and bile, its dark eyes were hollow sockets of grim green light and its bony carapace resembled a centipede’s exoskeleton. Bladed chitin plates etched with bizarre runic markings ground together as the monster stretched up towards the dark sky, its many mouths emitting putrefying breath. Worm-like muscles pulsed with purple liquid, and its hide was dark and slick.

The preposterously tall beast towered over the ruined city, a skeletal monstrosity of terrible fangs.  Monstrous and dissonant roars echoed into the dank sky.

Fantastic description of a horribly disgusting creature. Just once, Steven, I hope you have a mere human time traveler from this century wander into your story. Then write the reaction he would have after witnessing something like that. He’d wet his pants. 🙂 Great 8!

As usual amazing creatures. I know I would hate to accidentally wonder into one of your books. Don’t know if I could handle meeting any of your big nasties in the flesh. Good thing I’m not Dane or Ijanna. I am ready for February 7th!

I wouldn’t want to run into that thing, either, but I did, at least in my nightmares. LOL

Nice done. I could see it. Wouldn’t want to meet it in a dark alley, but I could imagine how it looked quite vividly.

Nicely! I meant nicely done. Stupid keyboard isn’t working. Must not like this arctic weather we’re having.
