Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors.  Or, as I like to think of it, “Steve’s excuse to post excerpts from CITY OF SCARS.”

Continuing (sort of) from last week, fallen knight Azander Dane arrives in the tumultuous city of Ebonmark looking for mercenary work.  What he finds is more than he bargained for.  After being offered a job by a shadowy woman named Vellexa, Dane meets her in a crime-ridden part of town, only to find her under attack by a band of apocalypse cultists.  Naturally Dane rushes to her aid.

They flashed sharpened teeth and hissed as they came at him with jagged scimitars.  The black-haired warriors bore bloody runes on their foreheads and wore necklaces of teeth over tarnished leather breastplates.

It was all Dane could do to parry their relentless blows as he backed away.  Pain pulsed up his arms with each ringing strike.  Mud kicked up around him and sweat glazed his skin.  He hissed as a scimitar painfully tore through the chain and flesh on his left arm, and blood splashed to the ground.

He glimpsed back him to see if Vellexa was going to help, but she’d vanished: he had to face the scarred killers alone.

Typical, he thought.

Thanks for dropping by, and have a great weekend!

What a predicament. I love his internal comment–amusingly glib considering how bleak things are for him. Lovely description, as ever 🙂

Thanks Clare! Dane has a rather glum sense of humor. He has to just to stay sane. ;D

I think I might get on with Dane. The Witch’s Eye is on my to-read list, all I have to do is get round to it!

Just like a shadowy woman with a V name to drag you into a fight a d leave you to defeat a band of apocalypse cultists. 😀 As usual, fantastic action energy and details. Great tension!

Gotta love those apocalypse cultist hoedowns. Those fellas really know how to brighten a fallen knight’s dreary day. Whoo! Yeah! Hey, who chopped up my arm? C’mon, guys, that’s not funny. And anybody seen that chick who brought me? She’s my ride…. (All of this is to say that I LOVE the contrast of his dry voice to his royally messed up situation.)

Somehow I’m not surprised either that the lady has disappeared for the moment. I like this hero, can’t wait to see what next. Terrific snippet (if grim)!

“Steve’s excuse to post excerpts from CITY OF SCARS.” Whatever it takes to get you spill about it. 😉

    What perfectly horrifying descriptions!

The last sentence–“…alone.” Yeah. That says it all.

    Good post. 🙂

Great descriptions on these nasty cultists. They sound like a vicious bunch. And of course, he’s left to defeat them on his own. Can’t wait to find out if he beats the odds stacked up against him.

Thanks, Mandy! Lucky for us Dane usually finds a way to muddle through…
