My 11 Most Annoying Writer’s Habits (A Rant to Myself)

I’ve been editing lately.  A LOT.  In fact, the rest of 2013 is basically going to be one massive editing festival, as I’m working on CITY OF SCARS (which I hope to release in late June), the BLOOD SKIES OMNIBUS (August), BLOOD ANGEL RISING (October, if it happens) and CHAIN OF SHADOWS (December), all of which have been written but need to go through several dozen rounds of revision before I feel they’re ready to see the light of day. That much editing...

Rant: 11 Unacceptable Public Behaviors (and 6 Nice Ones)

I’m not big on rants.  The reason is simple: I try to keep things positive.  You’d never know it from reading my fiction, but I’m all-around a pretty cheerful person, and I always try to see things in the most positive light (even when it hurts).  Some bloggers thrive on rants, and more power to them.  They’re just not my thing. Usually. But every once in a while I have to bust out and let my voice be heard, and since I do believe it’s been at least 6 months since I...

26 Stupid and/or Funny Things I’ve Heard People Say In Public

The title pretty much says it all.  In today’s era of Smartphones, Bluetooths, Iphones, and cluelessness, it should come as no surprise that we have a plentiful supply of inane, ridiculous, humorous, and just plain stupid shit that people say in public.  Sometimes I want to imagine folks are intentionally saying something outlandish to try and get attention…but then I remember that I’m a firm believer in the generally moronic nature of your average person, and I decide not...

What’s Important: Writing, Family, and Finding the Balance

Posted on May 15, 2012

Sometimes I need a reminder to be thankful for what I have.  And I have a lot. I have a beautiful family.  Yes, my kids have some medical issues, but they’re still wonderful kids (and by “wonderful” I mean “only drive me crazy 80% of the time”).  I have a good job that (barely) pays the bills.  I have a loving, intelligent, diligent wife who has her hands full keeping us all in line.  I’m in terrific shape (save for my stupid calf muscles…I wonder if I can trade those...

Burnout

Posted on Aug 29, 2011

Yep, burnout.  Everybody gets it.  I’m not sure what it is about this year, but I’ve been seeing it much more with the folks I know lately.  Maybe it’s stress from the shitty economy; maybe it’s the extra toasty summer; maybe it’s just a really bad case of airborne cooties. Whatever it is, I am seriously burned out. Part of it is the fact that, with the exception of a super-cool vacation that my family took a couple of weeks ago, I have been...

45 Life Lessons From Super Genius Wile E. Coyote

Posted on Jul 26, 2011

I grew up on Saturday Morning Cartoons, and while there are quite a few that I remember, none of them has remained ingrained in my memory as much as Looney Tunes.  Of those, it was the adventures of Wile E. Coyote, a hapless, determined, ridiculously inept scavenger whose existence revolved around his perpetually doomed attempts at capturing and eating the impossibly speedy Road Runner, that enraptured me the most. Growing up, I never knew what it was about Wile E. that...
